Course Target Market This course covers all aspects of traditional B&W photography. Participants will learn how to use a 35mm SLR camera; lighting techniques; how to develop and print their own B&W photographs. It is also intended as a refresher course for those who want to improve their 35mm B&W photography.
Entry Requirements Participants should have an interest in photography. Access to a 35mm SLR camera is essential.
Qualification Participants, on satisfactory completion of the course and any related assignments, will be awarded a Profile of Achievement Certificate in Black & White Photography from City & Guilds.
Total Course Time 24 hours tutored training - 3 hours per week for eight weeks. Participants should allow a further 3 hours per week for assignment / revision.
Course Description NMTC photography tutors are industry professionals who have received numerous awards for their photographic work. This course covers the essential techniques necessary to create good black and white photographs, from working with the camera to developing negatives and printing photographs. Topics covered will include theory of composition, lighting and creating exposures. Participants will learn how to use a light meter and studio flash equipment. Photographs will be developed and printed in a professional darkroom. All materials are provided. Cameras are also available to complete project work.
Course Outline
Week One Participants will be given a short history of photography. They will learn about composition, framing, lighting, tone, and form. Different genres of photography from portraiture to documentary will be discussed. Theoretical concepts such as depth of field will be covered. Techniques used to achieve quality portraits, landscapes and action shots will be covered.
Week Two Participants will be introduced to the 35mm SLR camera. They will learn about the features of the camera, film stocks, film speeds and their effects, how to load and unload film from the camera, different metering systems and the correct procedure for getting an exposure. Effects of shutter speed and depth of field will be demonstrated. Different focal-length lenses for the 35mm camera will be demonstrated along with their effects on shutter speed, depth of field and exposure. An assignment will be given at this stage for development in the next class - participants will be required to shoot a roll of film in order to process it in week 3.
Week Three Participants will learn how to load a daylight film-processing tank. Mixing of chemicals will be shown and the different types of developer and their effects on the film will be discussed. Participants will learn the different parts of the development process. The effects of "pushing" and "pulling" film will be covered. At the end of this class, participants will have produced a set of negatives.
Week Four Darkroom equipment and materials. Participants will store their negatives correctly and assess them in terms of exposure and correct development. The workings of the enlarger will be demonstrated and participants will be shown the correct procedure for mixing chemicals. The participants will now learn how to make a test strip and a contact sheet.
Week Five Participants will present their contact prints. After receiving some feedback from the trainer and the group, each student will decide on an image to print. The different types of paper available for printing and their effects on the image will be discussed. Contrast filter grades and their effects on the print will be explained. Participants will learn how to load their negatives into the enlarger and how to make a print. Localised exposure control will be explained and demonstrated.
Week Six Photographic studio work. Use of studio flash heads will be demonstrated along with the use of a hand held light meter. Diffusion of light source will be explained and demonstrated. The use of Flash Guns with the camera will be demonstrated. Participants will shoot a number of studio portraits.
Week Seven Project work. Participants will work (supervised) on continuing studio and darkroom projects. Finishing techniques, portfolio presentation, image retouching, publishing images online.
Week Eight Project work. Participants will work (supervised) on continuing studio and darkroom projects.
** Additional supervised lab hours will be scheduled throughout the course of the eight weeks.
